Trust in public institutions is something we’ve been banking up over time in New Zealand. Like saving money into a “rainy day” fund, we’ve slowly made deposits over the years into the trustworthyness of our institutions.

While other countries have been chipping away at public trust, we’ve spent the last few decades at the top of the least-corruption-in-society lists.

And now it’s time to draw on those savings.

During the level 4 lock down we’ve been very happy to accept restrictions on personal liberties. And we’re happy to do it. Because we’re not scraping the bottom of the barrel of our trust.
